The Cashless Bail Lie

It doesn't help the community, it brings pain and suffering

Of the many wrong-headed progressive ideas in the last 30 years — like climate change, gender fluidity, etc. — the one we should have seen coming was the idea that ending cash bail in the name of “criminal justice reform” would result in a better society. This is the lie we were told.

Truth is, ending cash bail did not make communities safer. It made them more dangerous. Here are the numbers that prove it.

New York City ended cash bail in 2019. At that time, roughly 6,000 people were held in jail. The jail population dwindled to about 4,000 people at any given time.

Then, crime exploded — robberies shot up 8.8%, grand larcenies up 9.4%, felony assaults up 50%, and auto theft up a whopping 171%.

You don’t need a degree in criminal justice to know why. Ending cash bail lets more (alleged) criminals back out on the streets to commit more (alleged) crimes before they can be brought to justice for their first (alleged) crime.

So, in 2025, the criminal justice system in New York City began finding ways to hold repeat offenders in jail longer, bringing the jail population back to 6,000. Last week, the new year-over-year crime stats were released — crime fell by 9.5%.

It doesn't get any clearer than that. Cashless bail hurts the community.

Postscript: If you’d like to explore further, Jim Quinn, in a NYPost op-ed lays it out well.

In the meantime, thanks for joining us this morning on May 6, 2026. We’re writing today from Ogden, Utah. We’ve been to Utah many times, and each time we return, we are awestruck by the natural beauty of this state.

  • Alan Dershowitz *NUKES* notion that Dem Party is “big tent” “They don’t have a wide tent. They wouldn’t let ME in! … They’re a totally intolerant party!” “I was the most popular teacher at Harvard … Harvard will NOT allow me to speak.” “They have a tiny, tiny, tiny tent! That’s why they’re so upset with Fetterman. They don’t want him within the party. They’d rather see him LEAVE the party.” “Don’t say you have a big tent when you are the most intolerant group in modern American history!” — Jason Cohen on X

Conspiracy Alert!
  • Anthony Davis, a MeidasTouch podcast host, claims without evidence that Trump's ballroom renovation is really for an underground military bunker where he will organize a coup when he is supposed to leave office. He also thinks SCOTUS chose to end race-based gerrymandering out of "panic" that gas prices are hurting Republicans' chances in the midterms. — Brietbart News on X

They Are Out There
  • London — Far-left violent extremist and Palestine Action cell member Samuel Corner, above, has been convicted at trial of inflicting grievous bodily harm and criminal damage over an August 2024 attack.
